Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has assured the people of the state that his administration would ensure the principles of justice, equity and fairness in the distribution of basic social amenities for the
This was just as a former Military Administrator of Gombe State, Group Captain Joseph Orji (retd) advised the governor to monitor the movement of funds to the local government areas of the state, to ensure judicious use of the funds for sustainable development at the grassroots.
Ugwuanyi gave the assurance through the chairman of Nsukka Urban Renewal Committee, Chris Offor, during a public consultation in Nsukka, organized by the committee to seek the views of the people of the community on how best to develop the area for the socio-economic benefits of the state.
He stated that Nsukka as, “the second largest urban area in Enugu State and a university town founded over 50 years ago,” deserved a facelift to enable it compete with its contemporaries in attracting technology and knowledge-based businesses for the socio-economic growth of the state.
Chairman of the committee, Offor urged for the people’s support of the governor’s passion for the development of the entire state in line with his campaign promises and broad-based vision.
Meanwhile, former Military Administrator of Gombe State (MILAD), Group Captain Orji (retd) an indigene of Enugu State, has called on the State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to strictly monitor the movement of funds to council areas of the state and ensure judicious use of the funds for sustainable development at the grassroots.
Speaking in an interview with Daily Sun in his Kaduna home, Orji, who hails from Aninri Local Government Area of the state, said this became necessary because development of council areas in the last four years, was not commensurate with the funds injected into them.
The ex-Milad, a member of the 2014 national conference, expressed confidence in Governor Ugwuanyi, describing him as a contented man, who would not hold back council funds as it was allegedly the case in the past administrations.
He said: “The Local Government administration is an area of endemic problems in the state, and perhaps, elsewhere in Nigeria. Infact, I cannot point at what benefit or development our communities in my local government area can beat their chest to jubilate for local government creation for them.
“A litmus test with empirical evidence, factual on the ground for the deployment of funds to my council area, and commensurate utilisation of such funds in the last four years for the benefit of the people, would fail and be a source of embarrassment to the past administration in Enugu State.
“Therefore, Governor Ugwuanyi should pay particular attention to the selection or election of local government council chairmen and councilors. The selection process should give way to well organised electoral processes to allow the electorate vote in those candidates in a democratic process.”
